1 – A computer virus is a computer program that can replicate itself and spread from one computer to another.
2 – First known computer virus was a program called “Elk Cloner”, it
was written in 1981 by Richard Skrenta, it attached itself to the Apple
DOS 3.3 operating system and spread via floppy disk. This virus, created
as a practical joke when Skrenta was still in high school. It was
injected in a game on a floppy disk. On its 50th use the Elk Cloner
virus would be activated, infecting the computer and displaying a short
poem beginning “Elk Cloner: The program with a personality.”
3 – The worst MS-DOS virus ever, Michelangelo (1991) attacked the
boot sector of your hard drive and any floppy drive inserted into the
computer, which caused the virus to spread rapidly. After spreading
quietly for months, the virus “activated” on March 6, and promptly
started destroying data on more than 5 million computers.
4 – As per an estimate, the Mydoom worm infected approximately a quarter-million computers in a single day in January 2004.
5 – Melissa virus (March 1999) was so powerful that it forced
Microsoft and many other large companies to turn off their e-mail
systems until the virus could be removed completely.
6 – A worm called Storm appeared on January 2007 experts believed up
to 50 million computers were infected from this virus by October.
7 – The Lehigh virus, one of the first file viruses (in 1987), infects command.com files.
8 – In 1990 Symantec launched its first Antivirus, Nortan Antivirus.
9 – Tequila in 1991 was the first polymorphic virus. Polymorphic
viruses make life difficult for virus scanners as they change their
appearance with each new infection.
10 – “Commwarrior-A” was the first known cell phone virus and it appear in March 2005.
