Top 10 Brain-Damaging Habits

  1. No Breakfast :People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.
  2. Overeating: It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.
  3. Smoking: It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.

  4. High Sugar consumption: Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.
  5. Air Pollution: The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.
  6. Sleep Deprivation: Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.
  7. Head covered while sleeping: Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.
  8. Working your brain during illness: Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.
  9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts: Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.
  10. Talking Rarely: Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain.

SCIENCE CREATED ANIMALS.

1.Sudden-Death Mosquito
These mosquitoes are created for sudden and quick death. These mosquitoes are released to mate with the females which in turn release the lethal genes from the males mosquitos and are transferred to the females which kills them or kills the young ones in her, so that they can't reproduce. Scientists at British bio-tech company claims that it can control the spread of the dengue fever "It involves irradiating male insects, causing mutations that make them sterile" claims the company. (Image credits: Centers for Disease Control)

  2. GloFish

Glofish is a genetically modified zebrafish which glows in dark. The fish has been ccomes in bright fluorescent colours like red, orange and green.
It all started in 1999 when Dr. Zhiyuan Gong and his colleagues were working on a fluorescent protein  which was originally extracted from a jellyfish. They inserted the gene into a zebrafish embryo and allowed it to integrate into zebrafish genome. These fish were created trying to create a fish(fluorescent) that can detect pollution by fluorescing in the presence of environmental toxin. These fish absorbs light and then re-emit it, which makes them look like they are glowing. GLofish the first genetically modified animal to be available as a pet.(Image Source: www.glofish.com)

3.Dolly the Sheep
Dolly the Sheep is the first cloned mammal created from a single microscopic cell from a single parent. Dolly was created in 1996 and lived until 2003 where she died of a lung cancer which is common in older sheeps. She was cloned at the Roslin Institute in Midlothian, Scotland by Ian Wilmut and his colleagues. Normally off-springs are a result of interaction of sex cells but in case of dolly’s birth, sex cells were not involved she was created using the process of nucleus transfer. Dolly was fertile and produced 6 lambs in total till her death.(Image Source: www.telegraph.co.uk)

4.Vacanti Mouse
The Vacanti Mouse created in 1995 by  Dr. Charles Vacanti, at the University of Massachusetts  was a laboratory mouse which had a human ear grown at its back. The ear was actually made by seeding cow cartilage cells nto a biodegradable ear-shaped mold.It was created to show that the transplantation of fabricated cartilage structures into human body is possible.(Image Source: www,news.bbc.co.uk)

5. See-Through Frog
The magnificent see-through frog was created to silence the world against dissection of the animals. This see-through frog does not require dissection to see its organs, blood vessels and eggs. We can see how organs grows, how cancer spreads through the skin of the frog. It truly a miracle in genetic engineering.(Image Source: www.news.nationalgeographic.com)

6.Ruppy
A cloned beagle from South Korea popularly called Ruppy, which means Ruby the puppy, glows under ultraviolet light. Ruppy was created by Byeong-Chun Lee. Ruppy was cloned by using viral transfection of fibroblasts cells with a protein, forming a red fluorescent gene. Now, that a pet i would love to have.(Image Source: www.asterling.com)

7. Landmine Detecting Plants
A company called Aresa Biodetection from Copenhagen has created a plant which can come handy in combat areas. These plants can actually detect land mines buried under the ground. Whenever flowers from the plant hit nitrogen dioxide which will reach the land mines buried under the ground the plant will change it's color to red.(Image Source: 1,2)

8.Enviropig
A genetically modified pig has been created for making the environment a little less polluted and safe to live in. The pig genetically modified pig produces 65% less phosphorus in its feces.(Image Source: www.ideaconnection.com)

SHORTEST STORY EVER TOLD.

It is said that the shortest story ever told was written by the then young Ernest Hemingway, who said he could write a complete story in only six words!

His colleagues disagreed, and each bet 10$ against the claim.
Hemingway wrote down the words on a napkin
and passed it around.
Everyone agreed that he won the bet.
Here is the shortest story ever told:
For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn.

FREE WORD CLOUD GENERATORS.

Word Clouds have caught the attention of the country and have become a part of the 21st Century classroom. While Wordle is the king of Word Cloud Generators here are some other word cloud tools that have some outstanding capabilities that are worth investigation.  Each tool provides a unique way  that can be used in  the classroom to facilitate the creation and study of word clouds. I especially was impressed with a few tools that actually helped students analyze a group of text using more then just the generated cloud.

Thanks for the visit, and as always please feel free to follow me on Twitter (joshuajsmart), I will follow back and we can learn from each other.– Josh

Wordle – (http://www.wordle.net) The king of word cloud generators generating awesome results with full editing capabilities. Check out the advanced tools for even more capabilities. Want to put words together so they stay together in the cloud, then just put a (~) in between – Example (Fort~Wayne). To have students avoid forums and galleries that may not be  appropriate be sure to link them using  the address (http://www.wordle.net/create). No log-in or email are required. Program allows printing, in order to save right click on Wordle picture and save as a jpeg and or make a screen print.
ABC Ya - (http://www.abcya.com/word_clouds.htm)  This application may be the most Wordle like and, in fact, operates much like Wordle. It creates final results that allow for font change, color change, and a randomized layout.  It does not seem to provide the function on word frequency, important to older users. Save options are in  jpeg format and there are print options. If you are used to Wordle this application may be an good alternative. It does not require email or log in.

Tagul - (http://tagul.com/) – Tagul has some features that Wordle doesn’t, like custom shapes selection and multiple fonts usage in one cloud. It also allows for the use of tagged words that can act as pointers to URL’s if embedded in a web page. It abounds in options but registration may limit classroom use.  Requires a log in with email.

Word It Out (http://worditout.com/) – Much like Wordle, it creates word clouds out of any text that you paste into the text box. This application allows  the word cloud to be customized by size, font, and color scheme.  Word It Out also allows the user to  ignore certain words and thus  keeps them out of the word cloud.  Can be used without a login, although the saving option requires an email. Can work around this option by right clicking to save as jpeg and/or screen print.

Tag Crowd (http://tagcrowd.com/) – While it does not give the color, unique style, or layout variation of of Wordle, it does allow one to see frequency of words. It also allows a file to be uploaded or a URL address to be used.  The word cloud creations can be saved as a PDF files or  printed from a full screen print menu. No login or email is required and free use of the product is for nonprofit use listed under creative commons.

Wordsift - (http://www.wordsift.com/) – This hidden gem from Stanford University doe not give the pretty effects of Wordle,  but does give several awesome  features that allow students to really analyze a word cloud. One unique feature allows words to be listed by how common or rare they are. Also allows for words to be listed in alphabetical order. Wordsift allows the user to click on words to view in an online visual thesaurus with dictionary, google  images, and word sentence placement. It even allows the user to view words by subject area and cross curricular areas by unique color coding and definitions that relate to specific disciplines.  Watch this video lesson on using Wordsift with students on a lesson about Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. What a great way to analyze a speech!  It even covers assessment of students using Wordsift. No login or email required. Any printing or saving would need to rely on a screen print.

Make Word Mosiac – (http://www.imagechef.com/ic/word_mosaic/) – A creative tool put out by Image Chef. This is one tool in their suite of tools to be used for people who like to create.  It allows for different shapes, colors, and fonts. It makes a real cool word cloud but may have limited use in the classroom. Items can be emailed and embedded in different social network forums. By pressing the more button you can save a jpeg. Larger images with higher resolutions are available for a price. Login or email does not appear to be required. Be sure to read terms of use of any usage outside of personal.

VocabGrabber – (http://www.visualthesaurus.com/vocabgrabber/) – Another creative tool that allows students to analyze a group of words. While it lacks the flashy pictures and clouds that Wordle can create, it has substance in creating lessons that can be used to really understand a word passage.  VocabGrabber analyzes text and generates lists of the most useful vocabulary words then displays how  those words are used in context. Copy text from a document and paste it into the box, and click  Grab Vocabulary! VocabGrabber will automatically create a list of vocabulary from the  text, which can be sorted, filtered, and saved. Click on any word in the cloud and a snapshot of the Visual Thesaurus map appears along with definitions for that word, and  examples of the word in the text.

TagCloudGenerator – (http://www.tag-cloud.de/) – This is a service that does not allow pasting in of text, but instead goes to a website that is entered by the user. The effects are impressive since the results are a moving flash file that can be downloaded. It also provides an HTML tag cloud.  It even provides a service for WordPress Blogs.

TagCloud - (http://www.tagcloud.com) – A word cloud generator since 2005 and is currently offline getting an overhaul. It is listed here so that it can be reviewed when it is back on-line.
 Have a great week!

HOW TO DETECT IF SOMEONE IS LYING TO YOU.

You suspect that your spouse is cheating on you? You think that your boss is intentionally prolonging the long-awaited promotion? You are convinced that your friend is avoiding you for some reason? These are the questions that are in our head from time to time, and because of that here are few tips that can help you discover if someone is lying to you.

Dr. Paul Seager, a psychologist at the University of Lancaster, in his book Would I lie to you? he reveals how people lied and he broke some of the common myths about lying. Here are a few of his tips that can help you to easily identify liars in your environment, but also to stop believing in myths about identifying lies.

EYE CONTACT
The biggest myth about lying is that people who lie avoid looking directly into your eyes. Good liars actually look right in the eye longer and harder than someone who does not lie, because they know that people believe that liars avoid a direct eye contact.

ANXIETY
Another myth states that a person that is lying shows great discomfort, and is constantly fidgeting. The opposite is true. When someone has to invent a lie, he eliminates all the attention from the body and directs it to the brain. The result is an unusually calm liar, and much calmer person than it really should be in that situation.

WATCHING UP AND RIGHT
The third myth is that the person that is lying is usually fixed on some view point. This is not confirmed by any investigation. It is believed that when our view is going up or down and left or right, we actually dig in our memory and then we are telling the truth. However, our sentences are involving different types of memories that stimulate different parts of the brain. So Dr. Seager believes that it is a myth as well.

TON OF THE VOICE
When a person is lying, its voice becomes slightly higher. Scientists believe that a slightly higher voice than usual is a sign that those people are most likely lying. The problem is that it is very difficult to see. If it comes to people you know, then you can see if their voice changes the color when you ask awkward questions. If it is a bit high, it is most likely that it is the someone who really lies.

BOMBING ISSUES
When a some person lies, it must concentrate on the story, and this usually results in easy answers. If you want to catch a person in a lie, let him tell you what he intended, and then start with a series of questions on it. If that person lies, his answers will be quite vague and they will lack in details.

RETELLING BACKWARDS
This is a technique often used by police officers. They will ask someone to explain their version of a particular event. Then they will request that person to explain that again, but this time start from the end. If someone lies, it will be very difficult and it is most likely that a person will become confused.

SPEED OF THE RESPONSE
Experts call this latent period of reaction time, and this is the time it takes a person to answer the question. If someone is lying, it will invest a lot of effort to come up with a lie, and for that is needed some time. Then it comes to a short pause between the set of questions and answers.

VERBAL SIGNS
If you think your partner is cheating on you, you should ask him a direct question: Are you cheating on me? It is important to listen carefully to the answer. If answer is: No, of course not, you can somewhat be sure that your partner is telling the truth. However, if the answer to your question is: How can you ask me that? How long we know each other? I am shocked at the moment... it will be suspicious. Namely, it is typical to avoid the true answer and the person who says it is most likely lying.

BEHAVIOR CHANGE
If you talk to someone who is relaxed and calm, you can determine what is its normal behavior, or what it is in a normal circumstances. When you set it a specific question and it suddenly change behavior, you can be sure that something suspicious is going on.

Ways to Stand Out Without Showing Off

Instead of pretending that we don’t really like attention and we don’t care what anyone thinks, let’s mute our representatives for a moment and admit that we all want to be noticed. Not only do we want to be noticed, but we want to be admired. I dare you to say it ain’t so.

The only problem with this is when we’re so focused on impressing people that we stop being

And for what?

Perhaps because we value all the things that we aren’t more than we value the things that we are? Because we've been misunderstood or embarrassed before, and we’ll do anything to avoid it happening again? Because we don’t realize that our most divine & supernatural strengths come from being soulful and self-aware and undiminished by our fear of criticism?

ourselves and we start focusing on superficial things that don't matter. Spending money we don’t have, saying things we don’t mean and throwing ourselves around just to be perceived a certain way. Eventually that kind of tomfoolery gets messy.
Most of us are so desperate to hide our insecurities that we attack before being attacked and we create diversions when they’re not necessary.

This series is about peeling back our layers of defense mechanisms so we can attract the kind of attention that we want from men, friends, colleagues, clients, prospects, you name it. I'm talking about how to manifest attractive energy in your life - without having to show off or be unnatural.

{1} First and foremost, know thyself. Have you ever known anyone who’s so invested in their representative that they’ve completely lost touch with their own true identity? It’s quite transparent, isn’t it? Don’t let the pressure to fit in make you a stranger to yourself.

{2} Be careful what you say about yourself. The words "I am" are such powerful words – be careful how you complete them. I can’t say this enough – if you want to attract positive attention, be a positive person starting with how you speak about yourself. It's a buzzkill to be around someone who talks bad about themselves all the time.

{3} Smile. Something as simple as a smile can completely change the course of someone’s day. A smile conveys confidence and warmth and makes people feel at ease when they’re around you.

{4} Be honest. When you don’t reveal your true thoughts, feelings and beliefs, you are sabotaging your chance to have sincere and loving relationships. While you think you are protecting yourself, you are really only preserving how you want to appear, not who you really are. You want to be loved for yourself, not for your representative.

{5} Acknowledge your mistakes. We’re so busy trying to appear perfect that we don’t realize how much more relatable and accessible we are when we admit our shortcomings. I don’t know what this says about me, but I’m always annoyed by people who try to gloss over anything that might show their imperfections. Show me that you're not a robot, please.

{6} Don’t make everything about you. We all do it. We’re having a conversation and we can hardly wait for the other person to finish talking so we can relate everything back to ourselves. Differentiate yourself by being a good listener and being generous with your attention. Give it away and it will come back to you.

{7} Don’t expect anything in return. Do kind, spontaneous things for people. Do it because it makes you feel good. The bonus is that it makes the recipient feel good too.

{8} Share what makes you special. Put your soul juice on everything. If you’re funny, make people laugh. If you draw, draw someone a picture. If you sense that someone is confused, pull them aside and help them understand what’s going on. Use your gifts.

{9} Go against the grain. Believe in yourself enough to state a perspective that deviates from popular opinion. You don’t have to change anyone’s mind to your way of thinking, but add your two cents to the discussion and have a voice. You're unique. Don't be afraid to show that.

{10} Don't cling to people or situations. It's takes some life experience, but you have to learn to let go. Do it with class. Do it with some fire. I know it hurts, but when you get through it you'll be proud of yourself for creating space in your life for what's next.

Ways On How To Get Smarter.

Geniuses Pictures
Al Einstein made quite a name for himself in the smarts department. See more pictures of geniuses.

What is smart? Some people judge smarts by standard benchmarks like test scores and grade point averages. Others think common sense, problem solving abilities and "street smarts" define intelligence. Standardized testing scores have proven unreliable and biased along racial and socioeconomic lines, and cramming for classes can lead to GPAs that aren't a true indicator of intelligence.

While we can't all agree on a standard for intelligence, we can agree that the human brain is the key to all of them. It has a great capacity to adapt, rewire and grow. Neural networks expand and strengthen through learning experiences. Stimuli make the brain stronger and more vital. This reinforcement of the brain's power affects intelligence across all standards, from street smarts to testing scores. Here are five ways you can increase your brain's capacity to take in and store new data. Or, said more simply, here's how you can get smarter.

                                  1. Take Care of Your Body

The human body is all connected, so you can't take care of one part of it without benefiting some other part. Physical exercise is important for good health, for both the body and the brain. Simply increasing your blood flow kicks up the oxygen and glucose levels in the brain. The coordination it takes to perform exercises also gives the brain a workout, especially if you're trying something new. Exercise also means you're battling sedentary lifestyle, or one free from mental stimuli.
http://weheartit.com/entry/64889844

Food is also important. There are many foods that have been associated with brain health, including fish oil, eggs, protein and dark green vegetables. Green tea, herbal tea and nuts are also good "brain food." Eating right, getting the required amount of sleep and exercises, both mental and physical, are the keys to improving memory and overall brain function.

                                                   2. Get Some Sleep

Wakeful exercises for the brain are great and necessary to help improve brain function so you can get smarter. But what about sleep? Not a whole lot is known about sleep, but we know now that scientists were wrong for years with the belief that the brain simply shut down during sleep to recharge. Research now indicates that the brain may actually do a little nighttime filing during sleep. The information from the previous day is catalogued and put in the proper mental folders so it can make the journey from short-term memory to long-term. Sleeping problems have been known to exacerbate other brain issues, so it makes sense that a good night's sleep can help increase the brain's function and ability to focus. It varies from person to person, but between six and eight hours of sleep for adults is generally recommended.

                                                  3.Ingest Bacteria

In June 2010, researchers at The Sage Colleges presented findings that show certain types of bacteria commonly found in dirt made mice "smarter." The mice given Mycobacterium vaccae performed better in maze tests and showed fewer signs of anxiety and higher levels of serotonin in the forebrain, the area that takes care of higher-order thinking.
The bacteria seem to promote the growth of neurons as well. This doesn't mean that we should all go out and start shoveling dirt in our mouths: You can actually ingest it by doing yard work, gardening and even by simply taking a walk through the woods.

These guys are getting a little smarter, one nap at a time.

                                             4. Exercise Your Brain

The brain, like many parts of the human body, needs regular exercise in order to maintain strength and vitality. Some more common brain strengthening exercises include fun activities like crossword
puzzles, Sudoku, and other word- and number-based brain teasers. There are other more academic ways as well, like completing math word problems and exercises relating to spatial relationships and geometry. Even simply reading this article gives your brain a slight workout. If these ideas are a little too scholarly for you, try simple things like mixing up your routine. Just brushing your teeth with the opposite hand or walking a different way to work forces your brain to work harder than usual, which is ultimately what you want to do.

                                                5. Meditate

For thousands of years, we've known the benefits of meditation. The practice of meditation can be different for each person, but it generally involves quiet, focused breathing exercises in which the practitioner is able to achieve a state of mental calm. Regardless of whether you believe that this mental calm is an enlightened state of consciousness, no one can deny the benefits of relaxed, focused breathing. FMRI scans have revealed that regular meditation also affects the actual structure of the brain. Researchers believe that memory, function, attention span and focus all benefit from meditation. One study showed that regular daily meditation can even increase the size of parts of the cerebral cortex. Not surprisingly, some of the world's leading and forward-thinking corporations offer meditation classes for their employees.

Why do we say 'bless you' or 'gesundheit' when people sneeze?

Many people have become accustomed to saying "bless you" or "gesundheit" when someone sneezes.
No one says anything when someone coughs, blows their nose or burps, so why do sneezes get special treatment? What do those phrases actually mean, anyway?

Wishing someone well after they sneeze probably originated thousands of years ago. The Romans would say "Jupiter preserve you" or "Salve," which meant "good health to you," and the Greeks would wish each other "long life." The phrase "God bless you" is attributed to Pope Gregory the Great, who uttered it in the sixth century during a bubonic plague epidemic (sneezing is an obvious symptom of one form of the plague).
The exchangeable term "gesundheit" comes from Germany, and it literally means "health." The idea is that a sneeze typically precedes illness. It entered the English language in the early part of the 20th century, brought to the United States by German-speaking immigrants.
Virtually every country around the globe has its own way of wishing sneezers well. People in Arabic countries say, "Alhamdulillah," which means, "praise be to God." Hindus say, "Live!" or "Live well!" Some countries have special sneezing responses for children. In Russia, after children are given the traditional response, "bud zdorov" ("be healthy"), they are also told "rosti bolshoi" ("grow big"). When a child sneezes in China, he or she will hear "bai sui," which means, "may you live 100 years."
For the most part, the various sneeze responses originated from ancient superstitions. Some people believed that a sneeze causes the soul to escape the body through the nose. Saying "bless you" would stop the devil from claiming the person's freed soul. Others believed the opposite: that evil spirits use the sneeze as an opportunity to enter a person's body. There was also the misconception that the heart momentarily stops during a sneeze (it doesn't), and that saying "bless you" was a way of welcoming the person back to life.
We now know that sneezing is a reflex action and is most often the sign of something relatively benign, such as a cold or allergy. A sneeze also can be provoked by being outside in the sunlight or from smelling a strong odor. Still, we persist in the custom of saying "bless you" or "gesundheit," mainly out of habit and common courtesy.

The Trojan Horse(1of the Biggest Lies in History)

If all is fair in love and war, this might be the most forgivable of the big lies. When the Trojan Paris Spartan king, war exploded. It had been raging for 10 long years when the Trojans believed they had finally overcome the Greeks. Little did they know, the Greeks had another trick up their sleeves.
absconded with Helen, wife of the

In a stroke of genius, the Greeks built an enormous wooden horse with a hollow belly in which men could hide. After the Greeks convinced their foes that this structure was a peace offering, the Trojans happily accepted it and brought the horse within their fortified city. That night, as the Trojans slept, Greeks hidden inside snuck out the trap door. Then, they proceeded to slaughter and decisively defeat the Trojans.
This was unquestionably one of the biggest and most successful tricks known to history -- that is, if it's true. Homer mentions the occurrence in "The Iliad," and Virgil extrapolates the story in "The Aeneid." Evidence suggests that Troy itself existed, giving some validity to Homer's tales, and scholars have long been investigating how historically accurate these details are. One theory behind the Trojan horse comes from historian Michael Wood, who proposes that it was merely a battering ram in the shape of a horse that infiltrated the city [source: Haughton].
In any case, the story has won a permanent place in the Western imagination as a warning to beware of enemies bearing gifts.

How to Feel 18 Years Old Again (Men Only)

(Cambridge) – Have you ever heard the old saying, “Youth is wasted on the young?”

You might have scoffed at that idea years ago, but as the days, weeks, months, and years go by, do you find yourself agreeing with it more and more? If you’re like most men, you’re not enjoying life as you once did because of three major problems that get worse as you age:

  • Loss of energy
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Loss of testosterone
Our fathers and grandfathers had to sit back and watch as their youth slipped away. As desperately as they tried, there was nothing they could do to stop time from stealing their strength and intensity. Fortunately, scientists now believe they have a solution that helps men regain their youth.

The Alternative to Aging

New research from Cambridge shows that as a man’s body gets older, it produces less testosterone. It’s the loss of this essential hormone that makes men lose their edge and feel much older than they should. Until recently, the testosterone-boosting products on the market were unsafe, unproven, or too expensive for the average person to take them every day.

A new, free blend of natural ingredients has been formulated to increase testosterone levels, build muscle, and boost performance in men. This proprietary blend, called Test X180, includes fenugreek extract, ginseng, Tribulus terrestris, and cordyceps. According to the manufacturer, these ingredients work together to help you feel invincible and give you the confidence that all men want and all women notice.

The men who have tried it are reporting an incredible difference in the way they feel and how others treat them.

Vernon Davis, who earned an MVP award for his record-breaking performance in the 2012 divisional football playoff game in San Francisco, uses Test X180 to improve his performance on and off the field. He recently told the media, “I feel invincible on and off the field with Test X180.”

Test X180 is available in GNC stores nationwide, but this award-winning company is so confident you’ll see positive results in your life, they’re offering samples online. These samples are only available online at Test X180’s manufacturer’s site for a limited time, and will not last forever.

Click here to see if you qualify now for a 14-day sample of Test X180
